Our Reflections on 2018 as the new era
2018 has brought with it many changes with the new regs which will have been in for 1 year on December 1.
On reflection it has been a year of "raising the bar" by
- reviewing our own practices
- assisting clients get to grips with their responsibilities and obligations under the new regs
- getting many sites comfortable with understanding the importance of their inventory and keeping it up to date
- getting many sites to upgrade their existing site plans to comply with the regs and be more inline with Worksafe expectations
- getting many sites to get to grips with the new training requirements in reg 4.5 and 4.6
- getting more sites to actually take ownership of their ERP and not rely so much on the year in year out input of the certifier to assist them
- assisting sites to understand why Fire and Emergency NZ need a copy of their ERP
- getting used to the changes between domestic residential and workplace installations (esp for LPG)
- getting used to the new way conditional location certificates work in the new world and all the confusion its caused
- managing the workload with some older certifiers no longer in the mix and realising that sometimes you cant get to a site in the time the customer may want
- managing the frustration of many sites when they cant get an electrical inspector to get their 4 yearly inspection done so their compliance certificate can be reissued
- managing the frustration of many sites when they cant find someone to do their site plan or it runs close to the expiry of the conditional certificate they hold which in turn leads to managing the frustration of the supplier as well as they want the certificate so they can supply the site
- Having said that I think we are on the cusp of settling into the new normal of HSW (Hazardous Substances) Regs 2017 and that soon all this frustration will be behind us and our customers and we will be moving into a period of realistic expectations all round where customers, suppliers and ourselves all know that "while good things take time" we have the processes in place to make the ongoing certification of sites in a timely fashion a reality without the stresses of 2018.
- Let us all see what 2019 brings
